Message: Been Caught Sitting
Scripture: John 5:1-9
This week, this 6th Sunday of Eastertide, we are back in the Gospel of John in the midst of Jesus’ healings, signs and ministries. In this story, he finds a man who is stuck – like literally! He’s been sitting just feet from a pool that when stirred up promises to cure even the most infirmed… for 38 years! Yes, he’s been there for longer than Jesus’ whole life just waiting for his turn to step into the magic waters. When Jesus asks him if he wants to be cured the man answers with all the reasons why he hasn’t get found his way into the pool.
I wonder, what is it that keeps us from living fully? What is it in our lives that we have lived with so long we have forgotten our own agency to change it? Or maybe what social ill have we given up on because it’s too complicated, we are too powerless, etc?
See you this Memorial Day Sunday when we will consider these words while also holding in our prayers those ancestors, family and friends who have died in the line of duty.
