Lesson: Luke 12:13-21
Message: Measuring Our Value
This week the question of our scripture will be: by what measure do we determine our value?
Our culture would have us use money as indication of our value against one another – the more money I make, the greater value (privilege, esteem, power, etc) I hold in society. We see this in our election process that includes extensive fundraising, our higher educational systems that offer greater opportunities if you have the funds to pay, and even between our churches, where more wealthy churches have greater opportunities for visibility and effectiveness in their ministries.
Knowing this (these cultural issues of Jesus’ day were not so different from our own) Jesus presents a different perspective. “Life does not consist in the abundance of possessions,” he says.
Join us in person (thank GOD, it will not be 100 degrees this Sunday!) or via zoom or Facebook to join me in wondering about how else we might know our value and how such a different perspective could affect our community, our culture and our world.
