This Sunday we’ll continue our reading of Jesus’ sermon on the mount almost to its end. This is the part that gets tricky, where Jesus uses as examples parts of the original law of Israel given to the people in the book of Exodus and questions its application. We will read about “an eye for an eye” and the laws of divorce and adultery. These are really difficult lessons to read because, by the end of it, we’re all feeling judged and indicted. Not to mention that, from the perspective of our modern western culture, much of what he’s saying doesn’t make sense. And still, we are called to uphold Jesus’ teachings and especially that which comes out of his interpretation of the law.
So, then, what do we make of these very clear and relatable lessons? Join us for worship on Sunday when dig deep for the common thread throughout this lesson landing on the foundation of all of the law of the prophets – a rule that applies to every generation through all cultures across this divinely blessed world.
