Message: Her
What does the Divine look like to you? Is it an energy coming from the Earth radiating in and out of life connecting us not just to it and to one another but to the moon and the ocean tides and the very rhythm of the Earth? Or is it a powerful but deeply compassionate man – one that contradicts though stands within all of this culture’s unrealistic and even harmful expectations and stereotypes for men.
Or could She be the personification of the active and creative energy of the universe (the Hindu term, Shakti) both creator and destroyer, warrior and nurturer? Could she know us even underneath the armor of our fear and trauma?
In her song, “Her” by Alanis Morissette (on her album, “Such Pretty Forks in the Road” 2020), Alanis explores these questions and offers insight into the feminine (in a sort of compassionate, omniscient badass kind of way) God that knows her well, and that she longs to know fully herself.
In short, this is a special invitation to all Gen X’ers who never thought they’d hear Alanis Morissette sung in church. See you Sunday!
