Our January show in the Betty Meyer Gallery is entitled The Colors of Sicily celebrates the adventures of five watercolor artists traveling together throughout Sicily in the fall of 2024. The friends were led by Gary Tucker, an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Keizo and Mito Koya, research scientists, are students and collectors of Gary’s work. Stuart Murphy, another student of Gary, is the author of over 80 illustrated children’s books that emphasize visual learning tools. Norris Strawbridge FAIA, a retired architect with projects across the United States, in Europe and in Asia, is also one of Gary’s students,
Their paintings were initiated as plein air pieces. Some were taken into the studio for further work. All are watercolors, many of the same scene as the group painted together in the mornings, enjoyed spectacular Sicilian lunches, painted again in the afternoon and then celebrated their efforts over dinners that ranged well into the night.
The over 40 paintings display the range of approaches of the five friends while celebrating their shared joy in watercolor painting. Some pieces explore the same subject while displaying a wide range of approaches to the challenging medium of watercolor.
Please join us on January 17, 2025 for an evening of fun, nibbles and bubbles, meet the five friends and celebrate their work.
