The UPA Book Club will meet this coming Friday, June 14, 2024, 10:30am – 12:00pm (noon), by Zoom and Conference Room, to discuss Run, a novel by Ann Patchett, 2007, 304 pages, Paper 2008, 320 pages.
From WWW.Browse reviews of Run: “Set over a period of twenty-four hours, Run takes us from the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard to a home for retired Catholic priests in downtown Boston. It shows us how worlds of privilege and poverty can coexist only blocks apart from each other, and how family can include people you’ve never even met. …Ann Patchett illustrates the humanity that connects disparate lives, weaving several stories into one surprising and endlessly moving narrative. Suspenseful and stunningly executed, Run is ultimately a novel about secrets, duty, responsibility, and the lengths we will go to protect our children.”
“The political statements that float on the surface of Run are as obvious as a light-refracting oil slick attached to scummy tide water beating against the Boston shoreline. It is clear that Patchett is aware of her political soapbox and the blatant philosophical and religious statements within her novel, and understands that these things alone would never stand up as an entertaining work of fiction. However, combined with a good story, great characters and ethical lessons, she can still say what she wants to say without bogging down the reader.”
